Vail aims to change more of its schools into charters

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Vail Unified School District continues to do what more districts are either considering or doing: join the charter movement.  The reason is simple: a charter student brings more state funding to a school district than a traditional student.

Vail already has four charter schools with Civano Community School K-8; Mesquite Elementary School; Acacia Elementary School; and Vail Academy and High School.

Tuesday night the board unanimously approved a resolution to sponsor Old Vail Middle School, Rincon Vista Middle School, and Desert Willow Elementary School as charter schools.  The district will lose almost $800,000 next year in state "growth funds" because it won't have those students as traditional students; however, it will gain $1.7 million in the following years by having those students as charter students.

Graffiti cleanup begins today at Saguaro National Park East

Crews included officials from Saguaro National Park and members of the Southwestern Conservation Corps.

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Happening this morning, a cleanup begins on protected national park land hit by vandalism.

Crews met up at 6 a.m. to try and undo graffiti tagging.

The Douglas Spring trail head, at the end of Speedway, is where the cleanup crews gathered.

May 12, was the first time many heard about the graffiti, when Tucson News Now broke the story and showed video of the damage.

Cleanup today will focus on the rocks, water bars and trail signs, but when it comes to the most vulnerable of items tagged, the saguaros it is a different story.  These icons of the Sonoran desert are delicate and will not have the paint removed today, as clean up will probably cause more damage than it will fix.

Crews will hike as much as three and a half miles up the trail to fix the damage.  These crews include officials from Saguaro National Park and young men and women from the Southwestern Conservation Corps.
