More updates on SR90 widening project near Benson

Here is an update on continued construction near Benson at the I-10/SR 90 improvement project.

Work will begin on May 14 in the first phase of the project, to widen SR 90 to seven lanes near the interchange with I-10 just outside of Benson.

At 7 a.m., ADOT will be closing the westbound lanes of SR90, just north of the traffic signal at Village Loop Drive.  These lanes will be closed for up to three months while the widening project begins.  Traffic that travels in both directions will be using the eastbound lanes to move through the project area.

ADOT crews will be working to reconstruct the westbound lanes and to build a raised median between I-10 and Village Loop Drive, new storm drains and street lighting will also be included.

Access to businesses that are on the east side of the highway at St. Andrews Road will be closed, while the project is ongoing.  Drivers will be able to access those businesses from Village Loop Drive.  Also during this project, the Caverns Drive exit from businesses that are west of the highway will be restricted to right turns only.  This might all sound odd, because SR 90 is designated as an east-west route; the highway actually runs north-south in the Benson area.

When the first phase of the SR 90 widening is complete, traffic in both directions will be switched to use the newly constructed westbound lanes and crews will begin work on the eastbound lanes.

This project is slated to be complete by 2013.

Drivers are advised to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
